Body Fat Indicated as Main Factor
in Cancer Development
Oct. 31, 2007
Body fat is a key factor in the development
of cancer, higher than previously thought and stronger
than the link between cigarettes and cancer according
a new landmark study conducted by the World Cancer Research
Fund.
Even small amounts of excess body fat,
especially at the waist, increase the risk of colon,
prostate, breast, and other common cancers the study
reveals.
A panel of nine independent universities
and 21 world-renowned scientists examined 7,000 existing
studies over five years, resulting in the most reliable
and comprehensive investigation ever into the risks
of certain lifestyle choices.
According to the report the evidence
is "convincing" that body fat plays a key
role in the development cancers. To guard against the
disease, researchers warn that everyone should be as
lean as possible and maintain a healthy weight range.
People with a Body Mass Index (BMI)
of 18.5 to 24.9 are considered to be within a healthy
weight range. Those with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 are considered
overweight, while anyone with a 30+ rating is classified
as clinically obese.
Researchers also found that processed
meat, including ham and bacon, was such a risk factor
for bowel cancer that people should avoid it completely
or in the very least limit their consumption of red
meat to 500g a week (the size of two decks of cards).
Among other recommendations researchers
say alcoholic drinks should be limited to two drinks
a day for men, one drink a day for women as alcohol
was strongly linked to mouth, oesophagus and breast
cancers. Salt intake should not exceed 2 grams a day
(about a teaspoon), sugary drinks should be eliminated
altogether and people should exercise every day.
If there is one constant reminder we
get from this study and all the other obesity related
studies we hear about, is that we need to take action
and make changes that can have a big effect on our cancer
risk and overall health.
